The increasing growth of interactive installations based on new digital technologies has provided a new chapter to exhibit artistic masterpieces. In this research, we have examined two virtual reality installations and two mixed reality installations centered by Van Gogh's works with the approach of the metaphorical concept of time. The purpose of this research is to find out how the audience perceives time and how virtual technologies induce movement in time and how the chronicle of time events is formed in people's minds. Based on the conceptual metaphor theory of Lakoff and Johnson, the abstract concept of time is perceived as an object or place by humans and the passage of time is understood as the relative movement of the observer and the place or the object. This article aims to answer these questions, how the conceptual metaphor of the passage of time as movement is manifested in virtual reality and mixed reality installations? And what is the relationship between virtual reality and mixed reality? The research method is both descriptive-analytical and comparative. First, interactive installations are described separately and then the formation of the time’s concept alongside with the extent of the audience's engagement is discussed. Finally the comparative analysis is provided. Data is collected purposefully and consciously from the events and art exhibitions centered by Van Gogh's works. The results show that in virtual reality, the audience is completely cut off from their current time and place. Hence, the audience finds himself/herself in another time span which is a result of complete emersion and the highest level of engagement. On the other hand, in mixed reality, the audience is relatively cut off from their current time and place because, the eyesight is not completely taken over by the installation and the user is still have his/her visual connection with the real world. In addition, a time event is perceived as a fixed place in interactive installations of virtual reality and the observer feels moving towards the time events (places); while in interactive installations of mixed reality, a time event is perceived as an object and it is the time event (object) which moves towards the observer.
